Oxbow, Calumet’s eighth Preakness winner, to stand at Calumet Farm for 2015
Joining a storied group of eight Preakness winners campaigned by Calumet, including Whirlaway,1941; Pensive, 1944; Faultess, 1947; Citation, 1948; Fabius, 1956, Tim Tam, 1958; and Forward Pass, 1968, Oxbow becomes Calumet’s first Preakness winner to stand at the farm since Tim Tam.
Oxbow, a Grade 1-winning millionaire and classic winner by Awesome Again, broke his maiden at two by 4 ¾ lengths, and at three he won the G3 LeComte at Fair Grounds by 11 ½ lengths. He won the 2013 G1 Preakness in gate-to-wire fashion, beating Kentucky Derby winner Orb and multiple Grade 1 winner Will Take Charge, earning a 106 Beyer – the highest Beyer of any triple crown race in 2013.
Oxbow was runner-up in the G1 Belmont, and was the only 3-year-old to finish first or second in multiple Triple Crown races in that year. He was purchased at the Keeneland September Yearling Sale by Calumet for $250,000.
“Oxbow is by sire-maker Awesome Again, out of a full to Tiznow. You just can’t find a more qualified stallion prospect with his performance and his pedigree,” said Ken Wilkins, Stallion Director at Calumet. “He beat Orb and Will Take Charge twice in the classics, danced all the dances, and didn’t dodge anybody. He will be an important sire here at Calumet going forward, and we appreciate the efforts of Taylor Made with his first book of mares.”
Oxbow stood for $20,000 stands and nurses in 2014. His 2015 fee will be announced at a later date. For more information, please contact Ken Wilkins at 859-221-0548, or visit CalumetFarm.com.
